A San Diego police officer who has been arrested twice for domestic violence in the month and is currently under suspension from the police force has filed for divorce from his wife of four years. In the petition, the husband is asking for sole custody of the couple’s two young children, alleging this action is necessary to protect the children.
Gilbert Anthony Lorenzo has claimed that his wife has mental health issues and abuses alcohol and illegal drugs while also taking prescription medications. His divorce petition accuses his wife of striking one of the children and claims that they are in danger from their mother.
Tanya Lorenzo, meanwhile, denies any allegations of illegal drug use or drug abuse and claims that her husband’s allegations are lies. Gilbert Lorenzo has been arrested twice recently for domestic violence assaults against his wife, including hitting her in the face and choking her. A cell phone video that records a heated conversation between the two seems to contain an admission from the husband that he in fact did hit her.
Officer Lorenzo is not currently under arrest and has not been charged with domestic violence at this point. With both parties alleging acts of domestic violence against each other and denying the other’s allegations, getting to the bottom of the story, in civil or criminal court, may be difficult. A divorcing spouse sometimes alleges domestic violence in a divorce proceeding in an attempt to gain an edge in a custody dispute. Also true, however, is that domestic violence is a very real situation that occurs during marriage and often in the weeks leading up to a divorce petition being filed. Actual violence against a spouse or child may be the last straw that leads to the filing of divorce papers.
The presence of children in the marriage makes the situation more heartbreaking, as the kids can become tools or pawns in the divorce, sometimes with long-term negative effects. Hopefully, the couple and their children will find safe environments from the threat of domestic violence and be able to work out the terms of their divorce without causing any harm to each other or their children.
